EXPLORING REGIONS OF KAZBEGI AND PSHAV-KHEVSURETI

Kakheti region, which  is famous for its wine production and Viticulture. The method of wine production in Kakheti is principally different from European methods.

Mtskheta, a home to the many of the best examples of Orthodox Christian architecture and religious heritage found in Georgia. The ancient history of Mtskheta is fascinating and detailed. The city was founded in the 5th century BCE by indigenous Meskhian tribes thought to have originally emigrated from Anatolia. Jvari Monastery-the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jvari Monastery is located at the top of the hill and is the place where the missionary St. Nino herself erected a cross in the 4th century to mark the coming of Christianity to Georgia.

Georgian Military Highway- North from Tbilisi and up through the Caucasus to the Russian border runs the famed Georgian Military Highway,  the best route via which we can enjoy the dramatic scenery, crystal-clear air, and indescribable grandeur of the mighty Caucasus Mountains.

Juta, which is one of the highlights in Georgia for trekking lovers. Here begins the ascent to the rocky slopes of Chaukhi mountain range, visible all the way. You will enjoy the Rhododendron meadows and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains.

Khevsureti-the architecture of the Khevsuretian villages confirms this– houses and towers are closely built to easily protect the village inhabitants from frequent attacks. Important villages are – Shatili.

Mount Kazbegi (5,047 m.) Mkinvartsveri (“Ice-Top”) – an inspiration for poets and writers, steeped in Greek myths and Georgian legends. Climbing this beautiful perpetually snow-covered peak of the Caucasus is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Arrival in Tbilisi. Transfer to the Hotel in Tbilisi

After breakfast full-day Tbilisi city tour, the capital of Georgia (5thc. A.D); visit Treasury of the Museum of Fine Arts, Triumphal Gate (5th- 6thcc), Anchiskhati Church (in circa 522-534), Shardeni and Cotton streets, Sioni Cathedral (in circa 575-639), Synagogue (renewed 19th c), Souvenir shops, Metekhi Temple, 12th c., The Abanotubani, Narikala 4th c, Rustaveli Avenue,-where attractions such as the Tbilisi Opera and ballet Theatre, the Parliament, Rustaveli Theatre, different art galleries and cafes will pay your attention and provide a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

    

     After lunch, start our trip by driving to a small and very beautiful, romantic town Sighnaghi (790m), called as “Love city”. Approximately 113 km. southeast of Tbilisi. The town has been settled since Paleolithic period and is walled with the remnants of the 18th-century fortifications, overlooks the Alazani Valley and faces the Greater Caucasus Mountains.

 

     Visit Bodbe Monastery (9th c)-one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia, due to its association with St. Nino. Her grave is still shown at the Bodbe Monastery. This place used to be a coronation place of Georgian kings. Visiting the Spring of St. Nino- emerged through St. Nino’s prayers, believed to have a healing power.

Overnight in Telavi    

     After Breakfast, drive to Alaverdi Monastery (11th C), parts of the monastery date back to 6th c. it was founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph (Yoseb, Amba), who came from Antioch and settled in Alaverdi.

      

    Excursion to Tsinandali, a house museum of Prince Aelxander Tchavtchavadze (a famous Georgian romantic poet and representative of Kakheti nobility), botanical garden and wine cellar, where we taste 5 sorts of wine. Alexander Tchavtchavadze, a godson of Russian Tsarina Catherine II, however, remained mostly a “cultural nationalist”, defender of the native language, and an advocate of the interest of Georgian aristocratic and intellectual elites.

 

     Visit to Kvareli District. Visit a unique wine store kept in a tunnel engraved in rock. The tunnel length is 13,5 km. The store maintains permanent temperature at any season of year, hovering between 14/16 Celsius, ideal for maturing wine. Here you will tought how to make real Georgian wine by locals, how grape is presses, test the world’s favourite white and red wines, how delicious churchkhela (walnut roll) so characteristic of Kakheti is made, Khinkali making, how appetite Kakhetian bread (Shoti) is baked…Witness it and take part in it.

   P.S The program takes at about 2.30 h. for group, where you with your hands  will make them and then taste …

 

      Afterwards, we take our long drive to Kazbegi, reach this region by late evening. En-route Kazbegi, visit to Mtskheta (2nd millennium B.C.), the ancient capital of Georgia. The town and its architectural monuments are included in the World’s Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. Jvari Monastery (6th c), Svetitskhoveli (11th c), – The unique murals of saints and Georgian monarchs are inside the main Cathedral. Souvenir Shops. If the time permits, we will visit to Ananuri Fortress (16th-17th cc).

     After Mtskheta, the drive is very scenic through the famous Georgian Military Highway (leading to the Georgian- Russian border), together with the high Caucasus Mountains up to the Jvari Pass (2395 m) and then down into Stepantsminda (1700m). Kazbegi region is a picturesque settlement overlooked by the biggest of all –Mount Kazbegi (5047 m). Before arrive in Kazbegi we will pass Gudauri ski resort. (2100m) as well.

Overnight at a hotel in Stepantsminda.

After breakfast, we start a leisurely 1.5 hour walk up through beautiful valleys and woodland that leads us to Gergeti Trinity Church (14th cc), beautifully situated on the hill at 2170m. We also enjoy the beautiful views of the highest Glaciers in the Caucasus- Mt. Kazbegi Glassier (5047m).

We then have a detour to the Dariali Canyon and then walk to Gveleti Waterfalls.

  • Gveleti Waterfalls,- Distance: 4 km; ↑↓300m

(walking time: 1-2 hrs)

 Overnight  at a hotel in Stepantsminda.

     After breakfast, we start our drive from the village Stepantsminda to a wonderful village of Juta, which is the highest  settlement (2200m) in the municipality of Kazbegi and explore the whole surroundings

  • Lunch is provided in Juta village (on request)

 

    At 17:00 PM we leave for Khevsureti Region. En route Khevsureti Photo Stop. Also, we will stop on so called ‘Sour Water’,-a healing water, which comes from the ground naturally and good for health, such as stomach etc.

Via Gudauri Ski resort drive to Pshavi-Khevsureti Region,- a remote mountain district in northern Georgia, located between Kazbegi and Tusheti regions. The road to Khevsureti will lead through alpine landscapes, following the wildly flowing Pshavi Aragvi River.

Overnight and dinner at a guesthouse in Chargali with a warm hospitality (can be with sharing facilities)

After breakfast, visit the Vazha Pshavela Museum. Afterwards, we will ride up to Shatili village(1400 m) with its traditional defense towers (UNESCO heritage site), which is a medieval highland fortress village situated 1400 meters above sea level.

 

5.30 h. riding of walking down in a forest returning back to Chargali.

 

20:00 PM Farewell dinners at a traditional Georgian restaurant ‘Tsiskvili or Maspinzelo’, accompanied with Georgian folk songs and dances. Which are greeting cards of Georgia. Add to this friendliness and easy-going hospitality and you’ll understand why a visit to Georgia is always a pleasure. Be prepared…and remember the best response to a toast is the word “Gaumarjos!” which translated as “to our Victory!”

Weather: the best season for this holiday is from mid-May till November. The average daytime temperature in May, Sep and Oct, is about +20 C to

+25 C and in summer time +28C to +35C. Some days are spent in the mountainous areas where the weather is variable. The temperature changes from +20C /afternoon/ to below +5C/+10C at night.

Health matters: Everyone should be able to participate in this holiday, without any limitation of age and physical shape. We recommend that each person will carry a small personal first aid kit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in good health before you join the holiday.
